Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who needs training?
A. All dogs can benefit from obedience training. It builds communication and confidence as well as setting a foundation for solving behavior problems. Your dog learns useful commands that help build a bond between owner and dog. Your dog learns to respect you as a leader and trusted friend. Only a sick dog should refrain from training.
Q. What type of techniques do you use?
A. We use Reward Based Training. We are knowledgeable in many different styles of training but we prefer all positive re-enforcement. We also know that all dogs do not train the same so we are able to try different types of techniques such as clickers, gentle leaders or training collars.
Q. How do I know if I need obedience training classes or private behavior counseling?
A. If your dog is exhibiting any form of aggression, separation anxiety, or phobias; you probably need behavior counseling.
Q. How will I know if I am registered for my class?
A. After you pay for the class using a credit card on our website, you will receive a confirmation email with your receipt. You will also receive an email 1-2 days before your class starts with further instructions and paperwork to print. If you don't receive either of these emails, call us to confirm that your registration went through properly.
Q. What do we need to bring with us to the first day of class?
A. Your up-to-date vaccine records verifying DHLPP, Rabies (age appropriate) and Bordetella for Kennel Cough (this is not always given with regular vaccines). Bring your dog hungry, with a flat buckle collar, a 4' or 6' cotton or leather leash and some soft moist treats.
Q. What items do I need for training?
A. Your dog should have a flat buckle collar for training. No snap or quick release collars and no harnesses unless for medical reasons. Other collars may be acceptable (no electric collars), contact us if you have any questions. You will need a 4’ or 6’ foot cotton or leather leash. No retractable or chain leashes please. You should wear comfortable gym shoes or any rubber sole type shoe. No flip flops, sandals or heels. You should wear comfortable clothing while training. Bring soft, moist treats and have something to hold treats and other rewards for your dog that has easy access – ex. Fanny pack, treat bag or a big pocket shirt.
Q. What if I pay for classes and can’t make it?
A. If you know ahead of time that you will be missing a class let a trainer know and they can give you extra homework. We do not give refunds so check your schedules before committing to a class.
Q. What if I don’t know how my Dog is going to act, what do I do?
A. Call to discuss this ahead of time with one of our instructors. Our facility has enough room to keep your dog separated from others. We can discuss details with you on how to handle this situation. Many dogs act anxious and excited the first couple of days of class. This anxiety will diminish as you and the dog get comfortable with the training.
Q. How long does it take to train my dog?
A. Each dog learns at different levels. The amount of practice, time spent and the fun you have also determines the speed of learning. Most basic commands can be taught in a 6 week course. Fine tuning or perfecting exercises can take longer. The follow through is up to you. You must put in the time to see the results.
